What is at the root of isolation, but a yearning for belonging and connectedness to people and places we call home? Is home something we build and nurture from within, is it something that we are fractured from and spend a lifetime coming back to, or is it something outside of ourselves that lives in the heart of the community? Using a mix of text in their mother tongues, print, book, take-aways and local clay, both artists navigate the losses, overwhelm and fragmentation from personal experiences at the intersections of isolation - cultural, emotional, interpersonal, social, biological and geographical. Exploring shared ideas of sustainability, joy, ease and comfort through the act of collaborating, they playfully encourage participants to foster care and initiate change through slowness and intentionality.

It is not permanence that makes a lasting impact - but instead, the space and time we take to gather, envision and create together. By supporting each other’s resilience and interdependence through these practices, we invite sustainable seeds for change and adaptable tactics for our collective survival. Creativity can provide an immediate source of coping, but it also nurtures our resourcefulness and ability to reimagine a world with more compassion and dignity for all.

Biographie

Born in Tiohtià:ke (Montreal), Kanien'kehá:ka Territory, Lux Habrich (始娜) is a multidisciplinary visual artist, arts facilitator and support worker of mixed Chinese and German heritage, practicing in Kjipuktuk, Mi'gma'gi, the traditional and unceded territory of the Mi'gmaq / L'nu. Following an Interdisciplinary BFA from NSCAD University in 2015, she is drawn to the immense storytelling capabilities in tactile processes as a means of unearthing buried intergenerational pain and power. Her interest in ritual objects and commemorative practices center on diasporic experiences of loss and belonging, embodied hybridization in blood and spirit, and honouring the untold stories and unspoken legacies that live inside each of us. Committed to developing inclusive creative platforms, and reimagining uplifting cultural futures, Lux externalizes intense internal grievances, to open up collective issues and qualities of larger community struggle to allow for shared moments of compassion and insight.

A VA is a multidisciplinary artist working with ceramics, textiles and the photographic medium. Their work often explores the concept of home, interpersonal dynamics and personal history. Originally from Guatemala, Dre finds frequent inspiration in fractured cultural identity, the fluctuating degrees of privilege it awards or forfeits, and their immigrant experience. They are interested in the construction of new spaces through objects from past lives, a process in which the embodiment of anomalous attitudes are forged as a means of evolution and survival. Having settled in Montreal in 2014, they found themselves drawn to the narrative potential in analog processes and interdisciplinary practices. In an attempt formulate and reconcile the self and its image, Vargas Alonso employs a meditative approach, enabled by qualities inherent within craft processes, channeling their ties to feminine and queer histories- reclaiming and embracing vulnerability, while honouring instances of resilience and strength.

TENDRESSE! Rendez-vous pour briser l’isolement

9 jours d'activités artistiques gratuites
7 - 15 mai 2022
